Flood Emergency Preparation

Strong tropical storms and hurricanes often cause flooding, even in areas that are not prone to such an event. With the extreme weather conditions that we are facing today, everybody should be prepared for anything, particularly flooding.

Here are the things you need to do to safeguard your home for flash floods:

Prevent water from entering your home

If you are expecting heavy rains or storms to hit your locality, particularly if you live in a flood-prone area, you should cover your doors, or even windows, with metal sheets, sandbags, or plywood. You can also use silicone sealant to ensure that water will not enter your home.

Shut off your utilities

You should remember to turn off all your utilities, such as gas, electricity and even water, at the mains. You should also remember to unplug all your electrical appliances and store them at high places, on the second floor, if possible.

Be mindful of your appliances and furniture

You need to ensure that your furniture and appliances are kept on high areas or upstairs. If you do not have a second floor, you can just raise such items on blocks or bricks. Be sure to remove carpets, curtains and even internal doors. Store them all in high places to ensure that they are protected from water.

Important papers, pictures and other personal items should also be placed on higher grounds, particularly on the second floor of your house. If not, you should put important papers on sealed bags to ensure that they are protected from floods.

Make sure that all objects outside your house, such as rakes, are kept in a safe place. Floodwater can easily float these items, which can pose danger to others.

Here are important things you need to do once you a flood warning has been issued:

• Information is crucial during situations like these. Thus, you need to always listen to the radio for announcements and updates.

• Be sure to cooperate fully with local authorities and emergency services. If they require you to evacuate, follow them and do not dilly dally.

• Since electricity will almost certainly be unavailable, you must ensure that you do all the things you need to do during the day. It is much more difficult and unsafe to do things in the dark.

• Share the information with your neighbors, particularly the old people, so that they can also prepare themselves.

• Be sure to stay inside your house. Floodwater can kill, especially when it is raging, so do not attempt to go out. It is important to note that rapid flowing water that is six inches high could make you fall, while two feet of water could make your car float.

You need to have a Emergency Plan, Which includes a Survival kit of some kind.

• Ensure that your pets and cars are in a safe location. Once you heard of flood warning, you should stay on the second floor of your house.

• There maybe objects floating in the water, so do not attempt to swim through raging flood. You can either be swept away or be knocked over by objects that are in the water.

Emergency Food and Water can also be a life saver, try to prepare for these things before the need is there.

• Floodwater may be dirty and contaminated with sewage, so you should avoid contact if possible. It would be a shame that you survived the flooding, but fell ill because of contaminated water.

• River bridges, sea defenses, and riverbanks are very dangerous places to be in during floods, so be sure to steer away from them if possible. There have been many cases wherein floodwater have destroyed or collapsed bridges and defenses.

The old saying "BE PREPARED" is a Great thing to remember and to fellow,

Tips For Emergency Tornado Preparation

Every year the southern states are wracked by malicious weather systems known as tornadoes, primarily from March to May. From spring into summer is the season for northern states. But with a constantly changing weather system tornadoes are becoming all the more likely at unsuspected times.

There is no storm considered non violent and tornadoes can be considered the most violent. They can strike without warning and cause immense damage to an entire town in a matter of minutes. Sometimes the sirens cannot come quick enough.

In essence hurricanes are more powerful, tornadoes are versatile and very hard to predict. They strike instantly and quickly. This is why it can be difficult for weather tracking systems to spot them and provide effective warning time.

Therefore, people often only know there is a tornado if they are watching the skies. Tornadoes appear as a massive funnel reaching down from the clouds, constantly circulating. Winds can gain such strength that houses end up like tumble weeds.

How To Tell If A Tornado Is Approaching

It is imperative that you understand what you are dealing with, before any safety measures, so you can spot the signs and appearance of this malicious weather system.

You must understand that before a tornado actually strikes, winds may not even appear destructive even just minutes before you see a tornado form. There is actually what is called the calm before the storm, where the wind is calm and it may not even be raining.

Thunderstorms usually appear first, they may or may not be trailed by a tornado but you must be prepared for such an event. There is always that possibility that should not be left to chance.

Sometimes tornadoes cannot even easily be seen. They are just wind after all. Making them just that much harder to track. It is the debris that is scooped up along the way that creates the funnel that is seen.

People that have survived through tornadoes often describe a loud roaring sound. Or that it sounds like a freight train is just coming through your house, and with equal power too.

Precautions To Take During Tornado Warnings

Before a tornado lands there is usually what is described as a dark and violet greenish sky. Also a clear indicator is a swirling cloud called a 'funnel cloud' is seen in a potential danger zone.

Basements provide the most reliable protection from tornadoes being they are located underground. But lots of homes don't have basements. So the next option is the crawl space. If you do not even have a crawl space its best to get in an area in the middle of your home with no windows.

If you are on the road driving and things are starting to take a turn for the worse and you need to seek cover, bridges provide excellent cover and protection. They are very solid and there is usually one not too much farther down any highway. If there's no bridge you can also get into a large ditch, as tornadoes are known to kind of jump over them.

Tornadoes can be devastating and ruin lives in seconds and often without any warning at all. However, if you read and become more informed about the warning signs and safety precautions in the event of a tornado; lives may be saved. Although losing a home is hard to deal with losing a life is even harder. Our lives are the most important things in the world and I hope I have provided some useful tips on emergency tornado preparation.

Disaster Survival Preparation - What Food And Supplies To Purchase Now For Emergency Survival

If you are even remotely observing all the bad economic and political issues of today, you might be wondering how our country can survive. Record job losses, rising energy prices, deficit spending, inflation - and this is just the tip of the iceberg! If these trends continue, many more millions Americans will be out of work, creating a downward economic spiral The result could be civil unrest and chaos. You need to prepare by stocking up on emergency essentials and emergency supplies and food.

The plans you need to make are much different if you live in a city or in the country. If you are a city dweller, one of the first things you need to make plans on will be to get out of the city if and when all heck breaks loose - the cities will probably be very dangerous places. If you have friends or relatives outside of the city, make arrangements to get to their place as quickly as possible and hopefully plan on staying with them away from the city.

If you have not started already, begin storing food - don't wait any longer. Some people are saying that major food shortages could begin in as little as 6 months - if that happens, it will not take too long before the shit hits the fan. You can begin by stocking up on canned foods because they are readily available and stay fresh for a reasonable period of time. Next, you can buy large bags of rice and oatmeal and store them. Also, make sure you have the basics such as flour and yeast to make your own bread. Other good supplies you should have on hand include sugar, salt, pepper and other spices. Buy powdered milk to mix with water, refill your propane tank for your grill and maybe get a couple of spare tanks.

This will get you started, but there are other food items you should consider. You can purchase long term food supplies in various forms - freeze dried, dehydrated, mre's, etc. You should consider buying these types of long term food supplies for several reasons: a) they are cheaper to purchase this way in the long run, b) they can take less room to store, c) they have a much longer shelf life (10-25 years) and d) there are many options on the food products you can purchase.

At the next Christmas, forget buying presents and start stocking up on disaster survival supplies - buy a gun or two if you don't have one, stock up on additional ammunition. Buy camping supplies like gas stoves, lanterns, sleeping bags, etc. that will come in very handy if conditions get terribly bad. There are other things such as water storage containers, water filtering and purification kits, first aid kits. And if you require special medication, don't forget to stock up on extra medication if you can.

Perhaps the most important thing though, start talking to your neighbors and see if they know what's coming and if they are also making preparations. If there is a total breakdown, you probably will not be able to rely on the local police because they will either be totally overwhelmed, or gone awol. It may be up to your neighbors to form a local neighborhood defense group to protect your property and your family. You should consider getting CB radios or other communications devices so you can stay in touch with your neighbors and be on the ready to help each other immediately.

It may all seem daunting now, but the key point to remember is get started - your family's safety is really at stake.

Essential Emergency Items And Preparation For Your Winter Roadtrip

Whether it's to visit family or friends in the next town or the next state, many Americans will be hitting the road around the holidays. Winter is a much more dangerous time to drive long distances but there are many things you can do to prepare for a long winter roadtrip and to increase your chances of reaching your destination without a problem.

Basic Check-Up

Before you leave on your roadtrip, it's important for you to check the basics of your vehicle. Some of the most important elements to check are the tire pressure, the antifreeze, the oil, spare tire and the wiper blades.

Plan Your Route

Prepare the safest route to your destination possible, but allow for a secondary option as well. Wherever you're going, be sure to let someone at home and at your destination know when you leave, what your route will be and what time you think you should be there. You should usually drive slower in the winter and if at all possible, take only major highways and roads. Never try to take shortcuts during the winter, especially in the snow.

Weather

You will also want to check the weather where you are currently, along your route and at your destination.

Emergency Supplies

Basic auto supplies should be taken along such as jumper cables, chains, jack and even an extra quart of oil. A gas can will also be handy if you have room for it. If you are driving somewhere you haven't been before, be sure to pick up some road maps.

A basic first aid kit, flares, blankets, matches or lighter, flashlight with extra batteries and shovel are also good additions to your safety kit. A shovel will be handy if you find you need to dig your vehicle out of the snow.

Food & Water

If you get stuck in snow or your vehicle simply breaks down, you will need to have extra food and water. Pack enough bottles of water for a couple days at least. Also, food supplies like energy or nutrition bars are a great idea. You can find a case of nutritious energy bars at the wherehouse clubs like Costco at bulk prices.

Technology

Great technology devices to have on hand include a GPS device to make sure you don't get lost, extended range walkie talkies and a hand crank cellular phone charger along with your cell phone.

Cold Weather Clothing

Everyone on the trip should have some extra warm clothing available in case they get wet. In addition to jackets and warm tops, things like gloves, scarves and hats will also be important to keep the cold at bay.

Extras

If you're stuck in your vehicle due to the weather for very long, you might want to have some handheld games, MP3 player, books, crossword puzzle books or other activities on hand for you or the kids. Some disposable hand warmers are also an excellent idea.

Using these tips and preparing well for your trip, you and your family should reach your destination without a problem.

Tornado Emergency Preparation - 9 Points To Be On Guard

Storms come in varied forms, all defined by Mother Nature and manage to destroy several lives & properties. The human beings have no control on the forces of nature and can do nothing but to try to keep ourselves safe as much as possible.

While the coastal areas of the US experience hurricanes and the northern regions face snowstorms & blizzards, for the continental plains the bane is tornadoes.

What are tornadoes?

a. Just like hurricanes, in this act of nature a funnel of spiraling air formed out of nowhere comes and moves vigorously.

b. It tears anything and everything that falls in its path.

c. Usually the tornadoes are half a kilometer wide.

d. They disappear almost immediately, as if they popped in to the air.

e. The weather forecasters unfortunately fail to predict their occurrence.

f. When ever a tornado appears, one should just lean down & wait till the spiral is over.

Also here are some tips to help you prepare for such an emergency.

1. Those who reside in a tornado prone area must have a silo just a few feet under their ground. The studies prove that such natural calamities can easily destroy the structure of the house. Staying in the silo then would save you from the disaster.

2. The silo must be equipped with all necessities of life such as food, water, medicines, etc. You must understand that even if your house sustained the direct hit, it would take time to get the repairs done and even the insurance company does not give the back up that fast.

3. In case the tornado comes all of a sudden and you do not get enough time to get down to the silo, make sure to find some safe hide out and get in there until it is absolutely safe to come out.

4. The family member who are parted away must get to the decided meeting point and wait for the others to arrive there only.

5. The recovery becomes easier in case one has some hidden stock of cash at home or in some bank. This emergency fund would help you recover the losses and make you feel that yes, everything would get alright.

6. Prepare for some good sources of light like candles, match boxes, flash lights, emergency lights & batteries.

7. It is a must to keep in touch with the news in times of such natural crisis so you must always have a battery operated radio with fully loaded batteries.

8. In the absence of the parents at home, in case a tornado strikes, one of the family members must be designated to lead the way for the rest. This leader is responsible to keep everyone safe & secured until they get some rescue or the elders return home.

9. In cases of emergencies more tan fear what kills is the panic & unprepared-ness of the individuals. So, the family heads must hold some tornado drills regularly. In the drill, they should set a standard such as getting in to the silo in less than 5 minutes. This would bring in more prepared-ness among the family and hence, they would be able to face the real thing with rather more strength.

While the tips given above do help you to face a tornado, we must not forget that these are quite unexpected and that anything that come in their way directly can hardly be saved. Then getting injured or killed becomes quite obvious for the individual.

Getting in to the silo is probably one and the only savior for everyone. In case you manage to get in there, make sure to wait for the all-clear signal before getting out of the hide out.

Once, you come out, of course, try to ensure the safety of the others in the house.

Civil War Emergency Preparation - Mastering Survival Techniques!

Peace is fast becoming a scarce commodity in all parts of the world. If the threat of war is not from over the boarders it is from within - civil war is what every country fears more than international aggression. The risk of having to face a civil war is an omnipresent risk and people need to need to be educated vis-à-vis what they need to do in times of civil unrest.

There are many countries such as Africa that are no longer affected by a civil war, in fact living in aggression has become a part of their lives, never the less they are well versed with ways of defending themselves and finding food and nutrition for their families. In Africa alone civil war has displaced as many as 5 million families many of them are living in evacuation camps set up by the army and social service organizations like the Red Cross.

Civil war is no different than a conventional war fought between two countries; the only difference is that the army is fighting people within the country. Nevertheless civil war can be a very devastating experience especially for women and children who in most cases are not equipped to fend for themselves. Apart from food, shelter and clothing problems civil war brings with it atrocities in the form of human rights violations - from military as well as civilian forces.

Every family living in a country that is threatened by civil war needs to put in place a contingency plan in case there is any unrest. These people should never live in the hope that their government will provide for them in times of unrest. Government, at most times, will heap atrocities on the people in times of civil war - remember that the government is fighting civilians in their own country. So, civilians are the enemy!

Preparations for civil war should include survival courses where they are trained in the art of self defense as well as the use of fire arms and other weapon training. While training in the use of fire arms adolescents must also be made aware of the dangers of handling a dangerous weapon, not just the adults.

Knowledge of first aid is very important in times of war and so every civilian must be well versed with the use of various first aid techniques. First aid kits must be prepared and kept ready to deal with open wounds as well as diseases such as diarrhea, malaria and other general contagious infectious diseases.

Families facing the threat of civil war need to prepare to be displaced in the hope of escaping violence. These people must prepare a displacement kit that would necessarily include all necessities such as covering, clothes and shoes. These times will mean living on the road for months without shelter. Your displacement kit will be of great help in these times. Include only the bare necessities in the kit to keep it light.

It is necessary to prepare for an emergency rather than hope it will not happen. So, if you are prepared you will have taken care of a few of your worries at least, and you will have improved your chances of surviving.

An Emergency Response Plan Requires Preparation Plus Information

No one wants to experience an emergency but everyone should be prepared for one by creating an emergency response plan. Making sure you have the proper supplies and information needed to survive a serious event means routinely updating your supplies as well as your field guides.

While food and medical supplies seem to be rotated regularly, emergency guides tend to fall out of date a bit more often. Take a bit of time to check your field guide and make sure you have the latest version. The subjects addressed in the guide also make a profound difference, so take a look at the following notes and make sure you have a guide that addresses all aspects of an emergency.

A section of your guide should address home walk-throughs and checklists. Obvious things like turning off gas to the house as well as not so apparent details like filling the tub with water are important to keep in mind.

Critical first aid is a crucial part of your guide and should be reviewed regularly. Your emergency response plan will address what to do to stay safe and secure your location, but medical care for the injured is without a doubt the most important aspect of handling the immediate time after an event.

Something that is not often thought of is decontamination and exposure control procedures. Part of a disaster is the possible loss of security or containment of hazardous materials. Knowing how to decontaminate if exposed is important, as is limiting the chances of exposure to dangerous materials to begin with.

Disasters are usually classified as natural or terrorist based. Your emergency response plan should take both into account. Homeland Security as well as other agencies has developed natural disaster response information as well as citizen terrorism response details. Make sure your field guide includes both.

There are also a wide range of national resources to assist you after a disaster. Contact information for federal agencies should be a part of your guide, and updating your copy regularly will keep the information current. Try and get a guide that fits in your pocket and has easy to read tabs specifying the sections.

Keeping a current plan for emergencies can make a big difference in unexpected disasters. Make sure your food and supplies are fresh and keep your field guides current and you’ll be prepared.

Emergency Lanterns: What You Need To Know About Emergency Preparation

There are so many situations that can turn into an emergency it is impossible to describe each in detail but, the tools and supplies needed to be able to react appropriately to most emergencies can be collected in preparation for an emergency. It is critical to have access to an emergency lantern during an emergency as this can make the difference between life and death.

Many times an emergency creates a life and death situation making the situation a medical emergency. If there is not the availability of an emergency lantern or emergency light source, the medical situation will be significantly compromised. Having all the medical supplies in the world won’t make any difference if it is impossible to see what is going on to assess the situation. When darkness compromises the assessment of injuries the ability to apply emergency medical procedures is also compromised.

The same is true for search and rescue operations. It is almost impossible to conduct emergency rescue procedures in the dark. Many times dealing with the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster means looking for survivors at night or in the darkness caused by searching underground or through rubble piles. Being able to see what you are dealing with increases the degree of safety for the rescuers and victims.

Emergency action plans are an excellent way to plan for the unknown and to be prepared to respond efficiently as soon as possible. An emergency plan includes putting together lists of supplies and tools that will help in the event of a disaster. When the list is final, the items should be collected or purchased and stored in an accessible place. Appropriate emergency lighting should be on everyone’s emergency planning list. To be able to determine the suitability of emergency lanterns, decisions need to be made after learning about and comprehending the pros and cons of the variety of emergency lanterns on the market as there are many emergency lantern options to consider.

Emergency lanterns come in a variety of models and types including: 12 LED light battery, 20 LED lantern battery, Windup LED, lantern and radio combinations, lantern, radio and television combinations, kerosene lanterns, and solar powered lantern etc. Each of these types of emergency lanterns has individual strengths, benefits and limitations such as:

LED emergency lanterns are super bright and provide intense light for close-up work as well as useful for distributing light into the distance.

Battery powered emergency lanterns can be bought with rechargeable batteries.

Windup or crank emergency lanterns can be used when any source of power is unavailable.

Solar emergency lanterns can be powered up by the sun without the use of batteries. Most come with an adaptor for a car or home.

An emergency lantern can be used at times other than emergencies making them a more flexible resource to have around. If using an emergency light for something other than and emergency, ensure when you put it back after use that you have recharged batters, solar panels and/or replaced low batteries.

Emergency Preparation For A Typhoon

Wherever part of the world you may live, you are likely to encounter a typhoon of some kind from time to time. Of course, there are specific places more prone to typhoons. There are also typhoons which are deadly and could cause great damage, not only to crops and infrastructures but also to human beings.

If meteorologists forecast that a strong typhoon is coming, it is not enough for us to just sit at home and watch TV. If the typhoon is strong enough, you won't even be able to watch TV because of electricity blackouts. Typhoons are just one of the ways nature demonstrates its power, you should take precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incidents during the typhoon.

Although different kinds of typhoons in different places may bring different kinds of danger, there are some basic emergency preparations that you can do. To ensure your safety, familiarize yourself with the kinds of typhoons that hit the area where you live or are visiting and with the local government's safety rules and regulations.

Once the National Weather Service have broadcasted that a typhoon will possibly hit your area, immediately start your emergency typhoon preparations. Here are a few things you can do before a typhoon arrives.

1. Fix any broken doors and windows. Make sure that there are no objects which could obstruct the entrance, just in case you may need to evacuate. Tape your big glass windows which can be potentially shattered by road signs, tree branches and other things.

2. If the place where you live always had problems with floods and a great typhoon is expected, move to an evacuation center in a higher ground even before the water levels reach a meter high. You should also park your car in a higher ground. Do not leave it in your garage because it can be carried by strong floods and cause bigger disasters.

3. Since it wouldn't be wise to be loitering around during typhoons and convenience shops are possibly closed, store enough food and water for a few days. Power and water connections might also stop, so you might as well prepare a lot of candles, batteries, rain coats and thick blankets to keep you warm.

4. Make sure that all items in your backyard or balcony are fixed. If any of those items can possibly be flown by strong winds, better store them inside for the meantime. Also, remove rooftop construction accessories, if any, as these can be detached and may break other people's windows.

5. Ensure that all water drains in your home are clean to avoid clogged drainage systems which can cause a lot of water problems.

6. Listen to news about the typhoon. If the power is down, make sure that you have a battery-powered radio so you are still updated on what is happening, and know if in case there is an emergency evacuation program. Listening to the news will also keep you informed when the typhoon is expected to stop.

Even if it already seems clear outside, do not leave you home unless you have confirmed that the typhoon is not coming back. It is possible that your area is just experiencing the eye of the typhoon. When the eye of typhoon passes, there are no rains or strong winds.

After the typhoon, do not forget to fix whatever has been damaged. Check that no water is leaking into your home. There are still a lot of accidents which can happen because of not taking enough responsibilities of the effects of the typhoon.

Emergency Preparedness For A Hurricane

There is nothing anyone can do when nature decides to leash out its fury. There is no way to stop it so people should brace for the worse and seek shelter.

In order to minimize the loss of life, most towns and cities have created emergency plans. Sirens are placed in strategic locations to announce a major evacuation; the emergency broadcast system is in place in the event that power and electricity has been cut off as well as stockpiles of food, water and medicine.

Those who live in the coastal communities will usually be battered by hurricanes. This happens between the months of June until November in the Atlantic and from May to November in the northern Pacific Ocean.

When this is first spotted on radar, the forecaster will already inform the public about it. There is no need yet to panic here since the weather conditions may change in the next few hours but if there are no improvements, it is time to activate emergency procedures.

The hurricane may pack winds exceeding more than a 100 miles per hour that can make cars, pieces of metal or wood cause severe damage to the home. Households can board up the windows and doors of the house with hurricane shutters and plywood.

People will rush to the supermarket to stock up on food, water and other essentials. These include candles, batteries for the radio and the flashlight as well as fuel for the generator.

All of these things are necessary especially water to prevent dehydration so every possible container must be used including the bathtub.

The most important which must never be forgotten is a medical kit. This should have bandages and some antibiotics to be able to treat anyone who is ill or injured until the person can be brought out to a medical facility for better treatment.

Should the incoming hurricane be classified as a category 4 or 5, residents are advised to evacuate and seek higher ground. It will be a good idea to travel light so only a few pieces of clothing, food and water must be brought into the vehicle.

The citizens are also advised to drive slowly and avoid panicking since this could cause accidents on the road.

The hurricane will pass within a few hours. This is the only time that people will be able to go out or return to see how much damage was done.

It is only after assessing the damage that towns and cities can say whether the emergency preparedness procedures that were sent in place were effective or not. One indication that it works is if no casualties are reported. This is because a house or even a building can be repaired but the life of an individual can never be replaced.

The people who live in the household can rehearse the emergency preparedness plan to see if some improvements need to be made. This is because time is off the essence in order to be safe in this type of crisis.

Emergency preparedness is key to ensure the survival of everyone present. People who live through this annually know what to do but those who are moving into the community should learn fast to be able to survive the onslaught of the hurricane.
