Earthquake Emergency Preparation And What You Should Know

A major earthquake took place in San Francisco back in 1906 which had a huge impact on the lives of all future residents of the area. It sent out a clear message: anything can occur between the hour that they go to bed at night and the hour that they rise in the morning. The burning question for most people concerned their odds of waking up again.

Earthquake Emergency Preparation Measures Worth Heeding

It is the same story for people living in Baguio in the Philippines, Japan, Mexico, Indonesia and other nations that have witnessed harsh earthquakes. Nearly all of these guys did not know what had hit them, and were caught completely unaware.

Many people residing in earthquake-prone regions choose to live one day at a time, knowing that there might come a day when they will not wake up. However, there's one thing setting these people apart from most individuals living in safer locations. Although aware of the impending tragedy in the form of a massive earthquake that could hit anytime, they are ready for it.

Residents of such areas enjoy their lives just as much as the next guy. However, they see to it that they live in buildings that are safe enough to handle earthquakes. The majority of the high-rise structures were specifically built for withstanding earthquakes.

One technology expert resides somewhere in the Marina, the most earthquake-susceptible area within the city. He is well aware of the huge risk he is taking by living there. The only difference is that he does not take chances and always keeps a number of gallons of water on hand. He also has emergency kits and earthquake packs ready. These contain first-aid medications plus packet food supplies. There are also additional batteries, flashlights and other gadgets in his earthquake arsenal.

People driving during an earthquake are better off staying inside their vehicle. If stuck inside a mall or grocery store, stay away from heavy shelves as well as other sizable items. If inside a sports stadium or theater when an earthquake strikes, do not run. Ducking under a seat and waiting until the situation calms down is the better option.

During earthquakes, it is important to remember to crouch down and keep away from anything heavy that could fall onto you and cause injury. Another good tip for an earthquake emergency is to shelter under tables so that you are protected from any falling debris. If this is impractical, exit the building right away and rush to somewhere open where there are no trees, power cables or high-rise buildings.

The Earthquakes themselves are not always the cause of all of the casualties. Some people die because they give in to panic, having failed to prepare for such emergencies. It is always helpful to have at least one emergency earthquake plan, regardless of your location.

The point is that you have greater chances of survival if you adequately prepare for such emergency situations. People who do not anticipate worst-case scenarios are the ones who tend to panic. They also usually end up the initial victims during an emergency since they do not have the presence of mind to do the sensible thing.

10 Things You Can Do to Prepare For a Blackout

What are some things you can do before a blackout?

1. Store Food Away

Store away a supply of food now. Keep canned meat, bread, nut butter spread, nuts, crackers, dried fruit and other non-perishables in your pantry. Keeping at least 3 days for each person should be adequate for short blackouts. Remember to rotate the food out and keep accurate records of expiration dates.

2. Keep a Source of Water

You will need a gallon of water for each person per day. So if you have a family of four you will need 3 gallons each for a minimum of 3 days. If you have bottled water delivered, you can rotate out a 5 gallon bottle in your pantry every quarter. For a safe clean water supply purchase gallon water bottles and store in your pantry rotating them out as needed.

You may also use 2-liter soda bottles that have been thoroughly washed with soap and water. Sanitize the bottle with a solution of 1 teaspoon of non-scented chlorine bleach to 1 quart of water. Swish this around to make sure it touches all surfaces and then rinse out completely with clean water. Fill with tap water and close with cap making sure not to contaminate the cap by touching the inside. Mark the bottle with the date you stored it and it should last 6 months.

3. Use Alternate Forms of Energy

During a blackout you will need to turn off all appliances. Unplug anything that is connected to outlets. If using a generator do not use it in the house or the garage. Be extra careful when using candles as they pose a high risk for fire. Always keep batteries and flashlights available.

My husband and I found a solar flashlight that can also be wound up in case there is a lack of solar energy. It is small and has a led light but it serves its purpose.

4. Communication

Cell phones and land lines will most likely be available but only use these in case of an emergency. If you have a cordless phone or cable phone you will not be able to use it. Get into the habit of charging your Cell phone regularly. Keep a portable Television and/or radio as well as plenty of batteries or the generator to operate it. Do not call 9-1-1 unless it is a life threatening emergency as these lines need to stay open.

5. Preparing Financially

Remember that ATMs require electricity and will be out-of-service during a blackout. This will also mean no access to credit cards or point of sale purchases. Keep an emergency stash of cash in a home safe.

6. Transportation

During a blackout traffic lights will be out and you will not be able to pump gasoline. This will most likely cause confusion, frustration, and traffic jams. Stay home if possible and if you must go out use a bike or walk instead of using your vehicle.

7. Special Preparations for the Disabled

Before a blackout even begins you will need to contact your local electrical company and register so they know where you are located. They keep records of your address as well as the power operated equipment that you use. Keep an extra battery charged for your scooter or wheel chair. If you are hearing or visually impaired keep a portable television or radio handy.

8. Accessing Your Home

This might seem silly but always keep a key to your house on you. If you normally enter your home via the electric garage, you will need to know how to manually operate the garage door.

9. Safety Considerations

Keep all your emergency preparation supplies in one location. Unplug all appliances and any electrical devices. Keep one light on so you will know when electricity returns. Never attach a generator to the home or the garage. Avoid opening your refrigerator or freezer. Avoid, if possible, using candles. Keep informed by listening to the radio or television.

10. Prepare an Emergency Contact List

Keep a list of contacts available for your family, friends, neighbors, schools, and places of employment. Make sure your children know what to do in a blackout. Prepare in advance who will pick your children up during an emergency. Know your schools policy about non-family members picking up your children. If you care for an elderly relative or a disabled relative know how to get appropriate services for them.

Doing these simple things now will save a lot of stress and confusion during a blackout. Sure, one might not happen but these things will prepare you for other types of emergencies. It will also enable you to assist others during times of emergency.

Emergency Preparation Guidelines In Case Of Fire

Every year especially during Christmas season, thousands of people die because of fire incidents. The number of casualties may tend to rise especially because almost people have lack of knowledge upon responding to fire emergencies.

Preparation is one important thing everyone must consider especially that fire can happen abruptly. It is not just vital for us to know how to act during fire emergencies but also how to avoid fire from happening.

Preparation is one ideal key to avoid fire to have you and your family safe and alive. Everyone in the house should be trained and taught about fire emergency preparation. Even younger age must know what to do in case fire occurs.

There are fire drilling seminars that can help a lot to train everyone during fire crisis. Schools, offices and other facilities are trained using fire drilling and this must be done to your house as well.

The first essential step is to know where possible fire exits in your house are located. Doors and windows must be wide enough for you and your family to flee easily. Always check the doorways and remove any obstacles or hindrances so that you can escape straight away.

A floor plan for every room will help the preparation easier. This is to ensure a safe and uncomplicated response considering the nearest possible fire exits in the room. The floor plan must comprise of essential details like the windows, doors, hallways and stairs.

After constructing the floor plan, meet the entire household and discuss the escape plan. A drill after the meeting is important so that everyone can act appropriately during fire incidents.

It is also important that each family member recognizes any signal that there's a fire such as bell ringing, door tapping, shouting etc. It is advisable that each bedroom of your house has flashlights and bell. Then choose a place outside where everyone will meet together after escaping the fire.

Let everybody in your family especially children memorize the way out. Tell them that during fire, they should feel the door first before attempting to open it. Also, don't open a door when it is hot but instead, look for another way to escape.

Whenever a member of the family was caught by fire, tell them to lie down and roll to the ground. This will help put out fire.

The most important thing to consider is to make your house safe from fire. Emergency numbers must be placed near telephones so that you can dial up easily. Smoke detectors are important gadgets that should be installed in key areas of your house especially kitchen.

Their batteries must be checked and replaced once in a while. Put fire extinguisher gadgets to key places of your house. If you have several floors, a fire extinguisher should at least be installed to each floor.

Keep all matches, lighters, kerosene and other fire-related stuffs away from your children and pets. Store them in a safe place where your children and pets won't reach them.

It is also important to avoid cigarette smoking inside the house. For smokers, it is advisable to go outside the house or stay away from things that can generate fire if they are smoking.

Flood Emergency Preparation

Strong tropical storms and hurricanes often cause flooding, even in areas that are not prone to such an event. With the extreme weather conditions that we are facing today, everybody should be prepared for anything, particularly flooding.

Here are the things you need to do to safeguard your home for flash floods:

Prevent water from entering your home

If you are expecting heavy rains or storms to hit your locality, particularly if you live in a flood-prone area, you should cover your doors, or even windows, with metal sheets, sandbags, or plywood. You can also use silicone sealant to ensure that water will not enter your home.

Shut off your utilities

You should remember to turn off all your utilities, such as gas, electricity and even water, at the mains. You should also remember to unplug all your electrical appliances and store them at high places, on the second floor, if possible.

Be mindful of your appliances and furniture

You need to ensure that your furniture and appliances are kept on high areas or upstairs. If you do not have a second floor, you can just raise such items on blocks or bricks. Be sure to remove carpets, curtains and even internal doors. Store them all in high places to ensure that they are protected from water.

Important papers, pictures and other personal items should also be placed on higher grounds, particularly on the second floor of your house. If not, you should put important papers on sealed bags to ensure that they are protected from floods.

Make sure that all objects outside your house, such as rakes, are kept in a safe place. Floodwater can easily float these items, which can pose danger to others.

Here are important things you need to do once you a flood warning has been issued:

o Information is crucial during situations like these. Thus, you need to always listen to the radio for announcements and updates.

o Be sure to cooperate fully with local authorities and emergency services. If they require you to evacuate, follow them and do not dilly dally.

o Since electricity will almost certainly be unavailable, you must ensure that you do all the things you need to do during the day. It is much more difficult and unsafe to do things in the dark.

o Share the information with your neighbors, particularly the old people, so that they can also prepare themselves.

o Be sure to stay inside your house. Floodwater can kill, especially when it is raging, so do not attempt to go out. It is important to note that rapid flowing water that is six inches high could make you fall, while two feet of water could make your car float.

You need to have a Emergency Plan, Which includes a Survival kit of some kind.

o Ensure that your pets and cars are in a safe location. Once you heard of flood warning, you should stay on the second floor of your house.

o There maybe objects floating in the water, so do not attempt to swim through raging flood. You can either be swept away or be knocked over by objects that are in the water.

Emergency Food and Water can also be a life saver, try to prepare for these things before the need is there.

o Floodwater may be dirty and contaminated with sewage, so you should avoid contact if possible. It would be a shame that you survived the flooding, but fell ill because of contaminated water.

o River bridges, sea defenses, and riverbanks are very dangerous places to be in during floods, so be sure to steer away from them if possible. There have been many cases wherein floodwater have destroyed or collapsed bridges and defenses.

The old saying "BE PREPARED" is a Great thing to remember and to fellow,

If you don't prepare for an Emergency who will.

Make sure to have these thing in mind as you prepare your Emergency Plan:

#1 Make a Plan:

Get started today so you don't have to worry about if you needs will be met.

#2 Store Emergency Food and Water:

Make sure to have 3 - 7 days worth of water and at least 2 gallons a day per person,( if possible ) or a 8 oz. a day to keep you alive.

Food is not as critical as Water but it is nice to have something in your belly to give you energy, A Emergency survival kit packed in some thing that you can take with you in a hurry can really help.

#3 Have a Emergency Light source:

Have a Generator(if possible) or a Flashlight, candles, matches. Light sticks can work in an Emergency Also so can hand powered Generator for your cell phone work well.

#4 Shelter and heat source:

It is always good to have something to heat food with and keep you warm, A camp stove, a can of Sterno (fire in a can),Matches and a space blanket or some warm clothes.

#5 Important papers and some Money:

This is a very Important thing to get together and keep some place where you can get to it easy. such thing as Your

insurance cards,

Birth certificate,

social security number,

Medication, etc.

You should also put away some cash just in case the banks, are not in service or if you need to move out fast.

I hope that this list will help you get start preparing for an Emergency the way things are in the world and the changing weather around us should call us all to action!

How Prepared Are You...Really?

Emergency (pl. -ies) - a sudden, urgent, usually unexpected occurrence or

occasion requiring immediate attention.

About half of all Americans say they now have a disaster supplies kit, the other half do not. In which half are you? Less than half of all Americans have an evacuation plan, more than half do not. In which half are you?

There are 163,000,000 dogs and cats in the US, yet 65% of their owners have no plan to keep their pets safe in an emergency. More people die in fires than in hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and all other natural disasters combined, yet 85% of parents in a recent poll said they do not discuss fire safety with their children. 72% of Americans think they have a 3-day supply of water, but only 23% know that each person needs one gallon of water per day in an emergency situation.*

Begin to get the picture? Okay. Most of us are not really prepared for an emergency. Let's get down to what it takes to survive an emergency: preparation, preparation, preparation. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security lists 30 Tips for Emergency Preparedness.

I'll summarize DHS's key tips and offer a few of my own that should be on everyone's list:

o Have a plan, write it down, make sure everyone has a copy, rehearse it:

- how to get out of the house or apartment

- where to meet nearby, where to meet if you can't remain nearby

- choose an emergency contact person out of the area, store the

name and number on your cell phone(s)

o Keep emergency supplies handy, enough for at least 72 hours

- important documents, credit cards, back-up cds, money, coins

- extra sets of keys (car, house, safety deposit box, etc)

- flashlights/lighting, portable AM/FM radios; preferably self-powered

- food and water (human & pet), emergency distiller and/or filtration device(s)

- extra set of clothing & shoes, extra blankets/sleeping bag(s), backpack

- first aid kit

- pet first aid kit and thermometer

- prescription and non-prescription drugs

- portable toilet (preferably a dry toilet) and toilet paper

- cell phone charger, preferably hand crank

- evacuation kit(s) (see below)

o Keep key survival tools handy (in or near evacuation kit)

- ABC type fire extinguisher(s)

- gas shut-off tool

- pocketknife, whistle, compass, waterproof matches

- ax, shovel, pry bar

- escape ladder for every floor above first

- smoke/evacuation hoods (one/person, 20 minutes of air)

o Be prepared for bird flu and/or biological contaminates
; all of the above plus:

- N-95 (or better) face masks, preferably enough for at least 2 weeks/person

- Tamiflu (see your physician)

- surgical gloves

- hand sanitizer

- additional food & water

o Evacuation Kit - one per person
; can include some of the above, be

creative, think ahead

- sturdy backpack

- substantial first aid kit

- 12-hour light sticks (1-3)

- 36-hr survival candle

- flashlight & extra batteries or hand crank flashlight

- portable AM/FM radio & extra batteries or hand crank

- multi-tool or Swiss Army-style pocketknife

- hand warmers (2-4)

- box of waterproof matches

- food bars for 3 days (3600 calories)

- water pouches for 3 days (6-8 4 oz. pouches)

- plastic cup (collapsible if available)

- roll of duct tape

- 25' - 50' of nylon cord or rope

- 2 or more dust masks or N95 masks

- leather work gloves

- folding shovel

- toilet paper, toothbrush/paste, personal hygiene items

- insect repellant, sting relief, sun screen, hand sanitizer

- waterproof bag for important documents

- compass, whistle, signal mirror

Sounds like a lot, but you only have to do this once and you're ready to deal with any emergency for the next five years or so. Call it life insurance. Pretty good Insurance too. Ask anyone who managed to survive a hurricane, flood, tornado, earthquake or fire. They didn't expect an emergency either. Catastrophe only happens to other people, right? Wrong.

Next time, I'll discuss how you should prepare for emergency survival in your car.

The Importance of Exercising Discretion With Regards to Your Survival Emergency Preparations

Let's face it: we feel better when we feel like we're part of a community. It's a simple fact and a biological one. By and large and with few exceptions, human beings are social animals. The concept of fellowship is in our DNA. It's why we join civic groups, political parties, and even churches.

Needless to say, when one of us sheeple wakes up from the proverbial matrix of the herd-mind and begins to see just how fragile the world we live in really is, one of the first things we want to do is wake up others that we care about to the need for reasonable preparations. The only problem is that, in doing so, you are announcing to the world that when the lights go out you'll be the guy with a generator and lots of fuel; and, when the shelves are bare you'll be eating well. How long do you think it will take the guy you eat lunch with at work and tried unsuccessfully to bring around to remember where he can find a stocked pantry when he's on his second day without food?

Now, in that situation, you're faced with two choices: you either turn your back on him or he becomes your responsibility and it is now your job to look after him and whatever family or ragtag band he brings with him. You could, I suppose, contend that a third option would be to give them a hot meal and a warm bed and then send them away. I reject that notion, however, because they would just come back a few days later and you'd be right back to the first set of options, only this time they'd be even more desperate knowing you'd already sent them away once.

I, for one, doubt I could turn my back on them. Therefore, I fully envision that if the worst case scenario ever occurs I will have family and a small number of friends (those whom I've confided my beliefs in and are aware of my preps) for which to care. The only two provisos I claim in a TEOTWAKI scenario are that my family comes first and everyone who wants to eat must be willing to work.

But, lately, a troubling trend has emerged. I touched on this topic in a post I wrote on 28 February and followed-up in my 1 March response to a letter from a reader. This is the recent rush to buy guns and ammo that we're seeing all over the place. People are afraid (and, rightfully so, I might add) that the current presidential administration and legislature are going to wage a war on the 2nd Amendment, and so guns and ammo are flying off store shelves and mostly into the hands of people who aren't going to have a crust of bread to eat if things really get bad. It reminds me of a post I read a few years ago on an internet bulletin board (can't recall which one) where a guy said (jokingly, I hope) that his preps consisted of a shotgun, several thousand shells, and a handwritten list of the names and addresses of his preparedness-minded friends.

Scary, huh? I hope it makes you think twice before sharing a lot of personal information on your website or blog. Unfortunately, I'm in a position where giving out a little information about myself is more or less required. As proprietor of a new home-based business, it looks a little shady when you hide things about yourself, all the while asking people to trust you with their credit card numbers. Even with that in mind, though, I would never give the exact location of my homestead online. To do so in today's world would be foolhearty, to say the very least.

So please be sure you're exercising discretion with regards to your survival/emergency preparations. Prepare providently and be ready to be charitable. We're all in this together.

Emergency Preparation Plan When The School Is Caught On Fire

Fire can happen all of a sudden. It doesn't choose any place or time. Fire can also happen even in places especially at school with advance fire extinguishers and fire alarming systems.

Since fire emergency is an unexpected incident, one best way to at least be prepared for it is to know fire emergency preparation plans.

There are two things to consider in fire preparation emergency plan. The first one is the information and the second one is the delegation. The very first thing one must do is to know where the nearest fire exits are located.

There is a manual guide or signpost posted to schools where you can be guided to a safe way out.

Everyone in the circle must be informed about this subject. This should be discussed after a well-organized plan has been summed up. Drilling can also train every student to respond accordingly during fire emergencies.

Since not all students will take the preparation plan sincerely, it is important that the trainer must impose everyone to take the emergency preparation plan seriously as it is everyone's safeness that matters.

Being alert is one character every students must have. Tell them not to have panics if the real thing happens. Fire drilling in schools are not done in a regular basis. Some schools do the drilling annually hence being prepared is one thing that should not be taken without due consideration.

The second thing in emergency preparation plan is the delegation. Age or school position doesn't matter in delegation but whoever notices the fire in the first place must warn everybody about it.

It is strictly advisable not to open the doors if there's a fire coming out from other room. The smoke will make the blaze stronger, which will make the situation worst.

Emergency numbers like 911 must be called up immediately and one should pull the fire alarm switch to warn everybody about the fire. There are classes in which students form a line while proceeding next to fire exit.

There will be thick smoke around that's why it is advisable to wear up something that will cover your nose and mouth to avoid suffocation. You should also feel things in front so you will know the way out.

If you are a student, never act as if you are a superhero during fire emergencies but let fire experts handle the job. It will be more helpful if you will just follow rules and instructions given by authorities.

It is also advisable not to use elevator facilities during fire emergencies. Power supply will be cut out and people inside the elevator will be trapped causing suffocation and even death.

It will be safer to use stairs instead of elevators since stairs are the fastest way to get out from a building on fire.

If someone is on fire, he must at least not panic and he should drop down and roll on the ground to eliminate the fire on his clothes. There must also a safe place for everybody to meet together after escaping the school on fire.

Everybody must stay in the place until the authorities give instructions if they are already safe to go back.

Fire emergency plan is an important thing to consider especially at school. Students must be alert and attentive to any instructions and emergency plans the school will give since it refer to a matter of life and death for everybody.

Guidelines and Tips for Fire Emergency Preparation

In the past we have come across several incidents where accidents due to fire have caused people serious injuries. Many have even lost their lives, especially during Christmas and New Year when the whole world celebrates by lighting firecrackers in huge numbers. As such, it has become totally essential for each and every one of us to be aware and have the knowledge of what needs to be done when fire-related emergencies strike.

Tips for Fire Emergency Preparation

Teach your children the fire dos and don'ts and what precautions need to be taken to avoid accidents. Also tell them what should be done in case such fire emergencies happen. Several schools also impart knowledge to their students about activities that can help to avoid, as well as overcome fire related emergencies.

Identify the fire exits in your home; doors or windows are paramount to escaping during a fire.

Lay out a proper plan with respect to each room in your house and inform your children and other members of the family about it.

Choose a place outside your home where everyone can safely escape to, if a fire emergency arises.

Everyone in the house should memorize the path that leads to a safe evacuation point during a fire so that they can all reach it even without the help of others.

Be careful while opening doors and windows during a fire. A door through which you feel warm air coming out of, or if you see flames or smoke, should never be opened.

If your clothes are on fire, falling and rolling on the ground can help put them out.

The first number in your telephone diary should be emergency unit numbers so that it ensures that even children in the house can easily dial these numbers and inform the fire department about the emergency situation.

Installing smoke detectors in your home is a wise act. Regularly check and change their batteries as and when necessary.

Fire extinguishers should be present in the house. If you live in a huge home, then placing more than one fire extinguisher becomes necessary.

Avoid smoking inside the home; this has been the cause of many fire related accidents in the past, merely due to carelessness.

Make sure you keep matchboxes, gasoline, and other flammables out of the reach of children.

Prevention is always better than cure. And when it comes to fire emergencies, preparation is what you need to avoid experiencing this potentially life threatening incident.

Emergency Preparations For Hurricane Season

Hurricane season may be around the corner when the weather starts to worsen. You might experience sudden rainfall as everywhere starts to get windy. Even if the hurricane doesn't make landfall near your city, the increased rain and wind can damage your home or knock out the electricity. Don't wait for the last minute to prepare for hurricanes! Here's what you need to know to make emergency preparations for the hurricane season. After all, prevention is ultimately the best way to keep you and your family safe during a hurricane.

Listen for the Hurricane Warning

Always keep yourself updated on the weather, because you never know when things might act up. Tuning into the weather report will give you a heads up on any signs of hurricane development. Also, it is always smart to prepare a radio powered by batteries so you can listen to any hurricane updates by local authorities if the power goes out. Too many people are reliant on their TV and internet connection for weather-related information, and these resources might not be working when you really need them.

Secure Your Home

It may not be necessary to board up any windows if the hurricane isn't expected to pass over your city, but it is helpful that you set your home up for hurricane resistance. These steps should be done well in advance of hurricane season. After all, you don't want to be running around with everyone else trying to gather building materials in the lead-up to a big storm. Make sure to cover up any holes and strengthen weak sections so your home does not face any damage.

Stock Up Ahead of Time

You may be locked indoors when there's a hurricane because of the bad weather, which makes it dangerous to venture out in search of food and other supplies. It is always smart to prepare an emergency supply of non-perishable foods and bottled water, enough to last at least a week, so that your family won't face any problems if you are locked indoors because of the strong winds and rainfall.

Prepare First Aid Kits

Hurricanes can be dangerous, even though you're indoors. In order to address any wounds or cuts that may occur because of the sudden wind, first aid kits provide the necessary medical tools needed to cover the wound or cut with and treat the pain effectively. Plus, it makes good common sense to have emergency kits throughout the home just in case something happens - even if it's not weather-related!

Prepare Flashlights

Hurricanes are known for cutting out the electricity. The wind and rain can also hinder vision, making a flashlight extremely helpful. Prepare flashlights with extra batteries well in advance of any potential hurricane warnings. Distribute them throughout the home so that there will always be one nearby.

Hurricanes are very dangerous, so it is best to get home as soon as possible, or to the nearest evacuation center, if the warning is sounded. It is important that you prepare ahead of time and get those extra supplies ready. Communication, food, and supplies are essential to keeping your family safe this hurricane season.

Emergency Preparation Tips For An Upcoming Storm

Citizens living in storm-prone areas are already trained about storm emergencies. Since they are always attacked by storms, these citizens can respond immediately to the storm whenever a signal is given to them.

However, for people who don't know what it's like to act during storm, they tend to have less chance for survival because of their lack of knowledge.

It is very vital to have emergency preparations before storm approaches so that higher number of damages and casualties can be eliminated. Storm warnings are given to areas, which will be targeted by the storms.

There are mainly two types of warnings that will be issued by the weather stations once storm approaches. These are the storm watch and warning.

In storm watch, you have to tune in to local radio stations to get updates and news regarding the storm, whether or not it will approach. If a storm is approaching, you will notice the disturbances in the weather. You may notice a gray and cloudy sky and you'll feel rushing winds with some rain.

Storm warning will inform everybody to stay indoors as storm is headed towards the area. There are also instructions that will be given by the local government especially to those living in unsafe areas to evacuate immediately.

Everyone must act accordingly to any instructions given by the local authorities to remain safe and sound.

Since storms cannot be controlled with any latest technology, the very ideal key to remain safe and unharmed is to have preparations when facing storm emergencies. Below are some helpful tips for storm emergency preparation:

1. Grocery and supermarkets will not operate during storms that's why enough food and water supply should be considered. Foods that will last for three to five days should be taken into account. Cooking might not be possible so opt for foods, which are instantly consumed like canned goods.

2. There might be no electricity during storms that's why have your flashlights, batteries, radio transistors, matches and candles ready. It would be better if you do all necessary things during the day.

3. Medicine kits are important as well. Have them accessible during and after the storms to treat injuries and wounds. The kit should comprise of cotton balls, medicated plasters, disinfectant, gauze and any other essential medicine stuffs.

For a family member with medical condition, prepare his medical needs in one carrier and make sure it is easy to access.

4. Prepare thick blankets and clothes so that you can keep yourself warm during the storm. This is to maintain your body temperature and will prevent you from getting sick caused by the cold weather.

5. If you think that your house will not be a safe shelter during the storm, it would be advisable for you to go to safer place and evacuate immediately. Bring along with you necessary things needed for your survival during the storm.

Tornado Emergency Preparation - 9 Points To Be On Guard

Storms come in varied forms, all defined by Mother Nature and manage to destroy several lives & properties. The human beings have no control on the forces of nature and can do nothing but to try to keep ourselves safe as much as possible.

While the coastal areas of the US experience hurricanes and the northern regions face snowstorms & blizzards, for the continental plains the bane is tornadoes.

What are tornadoes?

a. Just like hurricanes, in this act of nature a funnel of spiraling air formed out of nowhere comes and moves vigorously.

b. It tears anything and everything that falls in its path.

c. Usually the tornadoes are half a kilometer wide.

d. They disappear almost immediately, as if they popped in to the air.

e. The weather forecasters unfortunately fail to predict their occurrence.

f. When ever a tornado appears, one should just lean down & wait till the spiral is over.

Also here are some tips to help you prepare for such an emergency.

1. Those who reside in a tornado prone area must have a silo just a few feet under their ground. The studies prove that such natural calamities can easily destroy the structure of the house. Staying in the silo then would save you from the disaster.

2. The silo must be equipped with all necessities of life such as food, water, medicines, etc. You must understand that even if your house sustained the direct hit, it would take time to get the repairs done and even the insurance company does not give the back up that fast.

3. In case the tornado comes all of a sudden and you do not get enough time to get down to the silo, make sure to find some safe hide out and get in there until it is absolutely safe to come out.

4. The family member who are parted away must get to the decided meeting point and wait for the others to arrive there only.

5. The recovery becomes easier in case one has some hidden stock of cash at home or in some bank. This emergency fund would help you recover the losses and make you feel that yes, everything would get alright.

6. Prepare for some good sources of light like candles, match boxes, flash lights, emergency lights & batteries.

7. It is a must to keep in touch with the news in times of such natural crisis so you must always have a battery operated radio with fully loaded batteries.

8. In the absence of the parents at home, in case a tornado strikes, one of the family members must be designated to lead the way for the rest. This leader is responsible to keep everyone safe & secured until they get some rescue or the elders return home.

9. In cases of emergencies more tan fear what kills is the panic & unprepared-ness of the individuals. So, the family heads must hold some tornado drills regularly. In the drill, they should set a standard such as getting in to the silo in less than 5 minutes. This would bring in more prepared-ness among the family and hence, they would be able to face the real thing with rather more strength.

While the tips given above do help you to face a tornado, we must not forget that these are quite unexpected and that anything that come in their way directly can hardly be saved. Then getting injured or killed becomes quite obvious for the individual.

Getting in to the silo is probably one and the only savior for everyone. In case you manage to get in there, make sure to wait for the all-clear signal before getting out of the hide out.

Once, you come out, of course, try to ensure the safety of the others in the house.

Emergency Preparation During A Hurricane

When nature is angry there will be hell to pay. People cannot stop it once it starts unleashing its rage. Everybody will need to brace themselves for the potential damage ahead, and find shelter where they can. You have to be quick on your feet if you want to survive.

Emergency Preparation And You

To keep the fatalities down, most cities and towns have crafted emergency preparation plans. They make sure that the emergency broadcast system is ready in case the electricity and power are cut off. They also ensure that water, medicine and food are in ample supply. Sirens are likewise put in strategic spots so that the announcement of major evacuations is both faster and easier.

Residents of coastal communities are probably used to being hit by hurricanes. They occur between May and November in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, and from June to November within the Atlantic region.

Once seen on radar, forecasters will give the news to the general public. No reason for panic here yet though, since weather conditions can still change over the next following few hours. However, if things continue to worsen, emergency procedures should be activated.

Hurricanes can carry winds of over a hundred miles per hour. They can cause severe damage to wood and metal, cars and homes. Boarding up the doors and windows using plywood and shutters is always a good idea. People also head out to supermarkets to stock up on essentials like water, food, batteries for flashlights and radios, candles, and fuel for generators.

Having a medical kit handy is extremely important. It should contain antibiotics and bandages for treating injured or sick individuals until it is safe to take them to medical facilities for more comprehensive treatment.

Category four or five hurricanes are when it is recommended that residents evacuate and search for higher ground. Here, you need to travel lightly. Simply bring along a few clothes, water and food for keeping in the car. People are likewise advised about driving slowly and avoiding panic as these can lead to road mishaps. A hurricane is usually over in a few hours. After it is finished, people can come out and inspect the damage.

Only after seeing the damage can cities and towns truly determine whether the emergency preparation procedures put into place worked or not. A good indication that it was effective is if there were zero casualties. Buildings and houses can be fixed, but lives are irreplaceable.

Household residents can practice emergency preparation plans to find out where improvements are necessary. During natural crises, time is of the utmost importance. You need to move fast to achieve safety.

Disaster preparedness is vital to ensuring everyone survives. Those who regularly endure such calamities know exactly what to do since they are used to such happenings. It is a different story for newcomers to the neighborhood. When tragedy strikes, they do not have the luxury of time to really master what must be done. They need to learn the importance of acting swiftly to avoid any further damage.

Guidelines In Home Emergency Preparation

No one exactly knows what a home emergency could bring. But the fact that the result would not be as good as what you think, preparation is still the best way to be at least stay safe and sound in case such dilemma occurs.

Below are some tips, guidelines and advices from the office of Red Cross in California for home emergency preparation:

1. The first and probably most important thing especially for emergency purposes is water. A person can live for longer days by just drinking water that's why it is advisable to keep a sufficient supply of water for each member of the family each day.

The water must be stored in plastic containers. It will also be a safe way to have filters for water purification so it won't be hard for you to find safe water during home crisis.

2. Second to water is the ample supply of food. You should consider keeping foods that will last for three to five days. Canned goods are one example of non-perishable food good for home emergencies.

3. It will be also a good idea to have an alternative-cooking source aside from electric stove especially if power supply is not available. Cooking tools like propane tank and barbecue stove are best alternative cooking sources.

You just have to make sure that if you are to use propane stove, you have extra propane tank so it won't be hard for you to find another one in case the first tank is already empty.

4. Clothing is also important to consider for home emergencies. Make sure you have stocks of clothes good for you and for your family. Bedding as well should be considered during home crisis so you can get a better sleeping position.

5. Supply of woods is also necessary especially for keeping everybody warm during a cold weather. It is also good for fireplaces and stoves that use woods for burning.

6. Flashlight is a tool that would not be possibly absent during emergencies. Consider flashlights that operate via means of solar energy and those that can be manually operated so batteries won't be a problem.

7. Medications and prescriptions by your doctor should be kept in case home emergency occurs especially if you have a family member with certain health condition. Get an enough supply of medicines by contacting your personal health care provider.

8. Another necessary means during home emergency is ready cash. ATM might not be possible to use especially if there's no power supply and banks are not available.

9. Make sure that the gas tank of your car is half full so you can avoid lining up in gas stations.

10. Since power might not be available during emergencies, try to entertain yourself by having board games or books.

11. Lastly, get along with your neighbors because there will be situations where a help from them will be the best hand in case basic services fail to provide you assistance.

Keeping in mind the above tips will take you to a safe ride during home crisis. Preparation is still the most vital thing to do in case emergency happens whether in home or any elsewhere.

Preparing For Disaster and Helping Your Kids Not Be Afraid

Preparing for disaster can be tricky business when it comes to educating children for something that may never happen.

With the convenience of technology, exposure to witnessing the effects of an emergency or disaster is much more readily accessible to our children than it was several years ago.

Graphic photos and video that come across our television screens immediately following a tragedy can cause concern for our kids.

What can you do to assure your children so they feel safe now, and yet be prepared for disaster, in case it should happen?

1. Limit the amount of media your kids are exposed to during a calamity in another area, especially young children. Watching the event over and over may cause them to believe the event is occurring again and again.

2. Answer their questions truthfully. However, explain and use vocabulary that is age appropriate. Avoid over burdening them with too much information and graphic details.

3. Get informed about the type of disaster that would most likely occur in your area. Check to see what emergency preparations your city, county and state have made toward disaster planning. However, don't expect them to come to your aid immediately. Often it's three to seven days before emergency services are able to offer assistance.

4. Prepare your family for an emergency. It helps the family accept the fact that emergencies do happen, but you can do something about it. When your kids know you are prepared, they will be less concerned.

5. Allow your kids to be part of designing the emergency preparedness plan. Have a communication strategy with telephone numbers so they will know who to contact.

Discuss the safety rules and decide where you will meet in case you are separated. Practice the plan. This will help you determine the "holes" in the plan so your can make revisions.

6. Assemble a disaster kit that will aid you in case you have to leave your home in a hurry. It's suggested the kit should supply very basic needs, such as food, water and protection for at least 72 hours. Planning for 84 hours is even better.

7. Store enough food and water in your home to last from 3 to 7 days, in case you have to remain in your home during the emergency. Light, cooking and heat sources will be necessary also, in case electricity is not available for an extended period of time.

8. Involved your children in gathering supplies and putting your emergency reserves together. Participation will give them a sense of control. They will actually cope better during a disaster, if one were to happen.

Bottom Line: The more prepared you are as a family, the less concern your kids will have about surviving difficulty. Sometimes is not a matter of whether you will survive, but how well you will survive.

Emergency Preparation For Child Drownings

Every year 6,000 to 8,000 people drown in the United States alone. Many victims are children who can drown in any body of water. These include lakes, pools, bathtubs or even a big pail of water. To prevent accidental deaths caused by drowning, never leave your kid alone around water. If near drowning occurs, your best recourse is swift action and first aid to prevent death.

Keep in mind that a drowning kid cant call for help so be on the lookout for signs of trouble. Dont expose yourself to danger by jumping into the water to save someone unless you happen to be a good swimmer. Its better to use a long pole or branch to reach the victim. Or you can throw a rope attached to a floating object to pull the child safely ashore.

To save a drowning child, there are three things to remember: A, B and C. These stand for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. If you find an unresponsive child in or near water, ask someone to call for help. Until help arrives, take the child away from the water and put him face-up on a flat, firm surface.

To open the airway, tilt the child's head back slightly and lift his jaw. Check if the child is breathing and determine whether something is blocking his airway. In the absence of breathing, start rescue breathing immediately. Pinch the child's nose shut (unless he or she is younger than one year of age) and close your lips around his mouth. Breathe into the child's mouth twice. Do this gently and slowly.

If done right, this will cause his chest to rise. If not, the child's tongue could be blocking his airway or your lips aren't covering his mouth. Repeat the procedure if necessary. If you have a spa, keep it safe with a good spa cover.

Emergency Preparation Tips In Times Of War

The world has undergone many wars and even in our present time, wars still take place especially on countries in the Middle East. We heard a number of casualties and hundreds of destroyed properties throughout the country.

War is a life-threatening event, since the effects of missile and canyon bombs even gun bullets cannot be determined specifically.

If cold war starts to show signs of a more serious outcome, government warns the citizens to prepare for a nuclear holocaust. This preparation includes several teachings about war emergency training like how to act when war outbreaks, building underground silos for the citizens to hide with, and teaching children to stay under a protective table to keep them alive as much as possible.

There are cases in which civilians get hurt and even sacrifice life with just a shot of undefined bullet source. One effective way to free oneself to war's annihilation is to have an emergency preparation.

Below are some tips for war emergency preparation:

1. Get a sufficient stock of food and water supply. Canned goods and commodities that will last for longer time are ideal things to bring. Water will prevent dehydration especially if safe drinking water won't be available during war outbreak.

You can purchase water containers and jugs, however, if buying won't be possible anymore, you can get water from faucets. Just make sure that you boiled it well before you drink it to avoid water contamination.

2. Make sure you have emergency and first aid kits to treat wounds and injuries. Alcohol, band-aid, gauze, pair of scissors, and other medical paraphernalia should be checked out.

3. It is important to have a bag packed up already when people have to evacuate. The bag should contain all necessary things like water, food, few clothing, ID, batteries, flashlights, etc. This will eliminate any delays when evacuation should be done quickly.

4. One must have familiarities with the central government plans before war starts to get worse. There should be announcements on televisions, radios, and even on the Internet when signs of possible war take place.

Once you get the details regarding the government's plan about extensive war preparation, stay calm and follow the rules safely.

The tips above should be followed strictly as we are talking about saving human lives. The tips can also be effectively used for storms, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, and any other disasters. You should always keep in mind that these calamities may not happen expectedly that's why strict preparation should be at hand.

Emergency Preparation Tips During Earthquakes

The world has recorded many earthquake incidents for the last years and centuries. 1906 was a bad nightmare for San Francisco as they've experienced the abrupt tremor that affected the rest of their lives.

Also, Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico, and Japan don't escape the tragic event that brought up their life living in a sudden change. Many were killed and properties that cost billions of dollars have fade away in just a moment.

Earthquake is a horrible natural disaster that many are afraid to happen because at any moment from now, earthquake can take place without recognizing anyone. From the most famous person to an ordinary citizen, no one can escape from this awful phenomenon at any given time.

Citizens living next to earthquake-prone areas devote the rest of their lives thinking that there is a possibility one day they may not wake up again.

This thinking brought these people in alertness and preparation before, during and after earthquake happens, which makes them different from other people living in a safer zone due to the fact that they might be hit again by earthquake.

People living in earthquake-prone vicinities have many different precautionary measures to keep them as much as possible safe and alive during and after earthquakes.

They prefer to store several gallons of water supplies and emergency kits comprise of medicines and first-aid tools to rest assured their safeness all throughout earthquake occurrences.

Foods like canned goods, batteries, flashlights and other things necessarily needed are some important things on their lists.

It is barely important as well to fasten heavy and tall things and equipments on the wall to prevent them from falling once such tremor happens. During an earthquake scenario, better hide your self in a very sturdy table.

It will cover your head against any concrete debris that might hit your skull once they fall. However it is more safer to find your way out and go to place where no objects can fall to you like trees, power cables, buildings and the like.

For those who are caught driving a car, it is safer to stay inside vehicle. On the other hand, when you're in a mall, keep yourself away from heavy things or shelves and find a safer place to hide with.

If you're caught in a sport stadium or theater, hide under the seat until the earthquake stops and never join the crowd running as it might cause stampede and worst injuries.

It is very vital not have panics when an earthquake takes place. Most people die not because of the tremors but because they start to panic and they lacked of emergency preparation in earthquake.

They tend to get frightened first instead of responding immediately in earthquake scenarios, which will finally bring them into confusion.

Remember not to react in a frightening way during earthquake but find a way to seek a safer zone for you to hide with.

How To Achieve Successful Flood Emergency Preparation

One natural disaster that is common in the United States is flooding. Statistics from the US Red Cross show that each year, floods kill some one hundred people and in terms of cost damages, around four billion dollars are due to floods. In the event of floods, a little bit of flood emergency preparation goes a long way.

Flood Emergency Preparation Pointers

There are ways to prepare for flood eventualities. Below are a number of tips along with other advice for being ready and knowing what to do during flood mishaps.

Expect the unexpected - Floods are capable of causing a world of hurt and damage. You need to understand and to be aware of the extreme damage that floods can cause. Such inevitable scenarios include uprooted trees, rolling boulders, debris sliding, and destruction of bridges and buildings.

Get familiar - Master the different warning signs or signals that accompany floods. Familiarize yourself about what happens in your community whenever a flood takes place.

Have insurance - It would be a great help if you had insurance especially suited to a flood incident. You may find this hard to believe, but most homeowners insurance policies do not cover any damage brought about by floods, either on you or your property.

Move - If your electricity panels, fireplace, water heater or furnace is located on the first floor or in the basement of your house, consider transferring them to somewhere higher like the attic. This way, there is less chance of them being ruined or destroyed by rushing floodwaters.

Check, then build - Consult local building codes. This will tell you if it is acceptable to erect walls for floods. They can serve as barriers surrounding your home to prevent floodwater from entering your property.

Have supplies and a radio ready - A battery-operated or wind-up radio is a must in case the power gets cut off. First-aid kits along with food supplies like canned goods are likewise important to have. Of course, it goes without saying that you will want to keep a can opener handy.

No harm in asking - Inquire with the local planning and zoning office regarding whether the land your property is standing on is below or above flood level. It also does not hurt to find out if the region has been flooded in the past. Such info helps in making preparations in case floods do strike.

Learn - Know the evacuation plans of the community. This aids in preparing yourself and your loved ones about the emergency drills and other stuff to do.

Store important paperwork - This includes any passports, insurance and birth certificates. Keep them in a waterproof box that is easily accessible.

Plug everything - You can prevent floodwaters from invading the house drains if you plug all of the trap sewers. Use check valves for this task. Big corks or stoppers are also great for plugging sinks and tubs during an emergency.

Waterproof everything - Use waterproof compounds to seal and protect basement walls. This prevents floodwaters from gaining entry through the cracks.

The bottom line: preparation is your single, best defense when you encounter floods. Being ready is the key to surviving such tragedies.

Emergency Preparation Tips for Typhoons

Almost all countries near major ocean bodies are plagued occasionally by the occurrence of typhoons. In the Pacific, the weather disturbance is widely called typhoon. It is cyclone in the Indian Ocean and in the United States, where most often it comes from the Atlantic, it is called hurricane.

A typhoon is a massive accumulation of destructive winds and torrential rains over a huge body of water, particularly the ocean. The accumulation is facilitated by an area characterized by the presence of a low-pressure, which makes evaporation and wind development faster.

Typhoons do not develop overnight. Often, it takes about a few days before one is developed. Usually, typhoons start as thunderstorms that accumulate strength and intensify into a massive weather disturbance.

Typhoons are easily tracked and monitored by weather satellites because of their huge radius and accumulated cloud system.

Thus, weather bureaus are always able to track a development of one, making it possible for concerned government and safety bodies to release typhoon warnings for the safety of people who might be affected by the weather onset.

A typhoon is an almost predictable calamity. Almost - because its tracks can easily change, but certain - because its presence is easily monitored.

Preparing for a typhoon

Countries that are always visited by typhoons have instituted safety measures to prepare people for the destructive weather occurrence and to help curb, if not totally prevent, injuries and casualties.

When a typhoon is about to hit an area, typhoon warnings should already be released, at least 24 to 48 hours before the expected landfall of the weather disturbance.

Thus, people, whose residences are within the warning areas, should first and foremost make the necessary safety precautions. Here are some of them.

Store enough food and drinking water that would last for a few days. The typhoons may bring in torrential rains and destructive winds that may ruin infrastructure. Groceries and markets might not be able to resume operations after a typhoon, so make sure your supplies would last until the situation goes back to normal. Having an emergency kit is being prepared in advance.

Make sure your home is sturdy enough to endure potential gusty winds and flash floods. If not, just evacuate and go to designated safe evacuation or safety center.

During the typhoon, you may opt to put off electric currents within the house to prevent any electrical accidents. The local utility firm will voluntarily cut off the electric supply.

Typhoons bring in rains and winds so make sure you have jackets and umbrellas, in case you may need to flee.

If your home is safe enough, just stay indoors before and during the typhoon to ensure safety. During typhoons, electric wires might fall down to the streets and compromise safety. Same goes for falling, or even flying debris, which are the usual cause of injuries and casualties.

Always monitor news updates regarding the typhoon. Get transistor radios to make sure there would be no news blackout in case the electric and communication facilities shut down.

Remember that typhoons are weather phenomenon. One can never prevent it from forming and coming over. However, what people can do is to help prevent the destruction of the weather disturbance.

They can help by not becoming one of the casualties. Life is too precious and it is not worth losing it due to some occasional weather occurrence like the typhoon.

Emergency Preparation For A Crisis Disrupted Food Shortage

Being ready for an emergency is something we all should be thinking about, whether it be a natural disaster such as an earthquake or hurricane, or a more man made crisis such as civil unrest or even riots, Whatever the cause, any disruption in the supply chain will most likely cause a food shortage.

Depending on your personal economic situation, having food or items set aside for an emergency can be a challenge as the present economic climate has taken a toll on many in the US and around the world, and does not seem to be getting better any time soon.

On a global scale, unless there is severe weather conditions such as long term drought, many developing or third world countries, the problems are many times cultural, where social hierarchy structure sometimes dictates who gets what.

Even more damaging to local people getting aid is, corrupt dictatorial type government leaders that use aid, food, goods or money, for their own gain with little or no help to those that need it the most, passing on only the bare minimums to the masses. It is said there is enough food produced in the world to feed all, but most of it falls victim to these cultural and governmental diversion of goods and food.

Countless organizations over the years have contributed to helping the local people with better water supplies to introduce farming methods for a more steady supply of food and goods, yet at times the locals are still at the mercy of a reliable distribution and marketing infrastructure.

With this as a backdrop, we see this as the larger global food situation that will eventually put pressure on more developed nations and their food supplies to help, but the problem with this is trade agreements, depending on the countries involved, their supplies, and the other unseen culprit, inflation.

Many major world currencies are losing value, thus reducing buying power, affecting anything to large commodity contracts to the price of food in the grocery store, which affects you, the consumer.

The grain supplies in the U.S. have been lower for quite sometime, or rather more marginal with less cushion than what we are capable of producing. With the government paying farmers not to farm and also pushing ethanol production, the supply has more demands and affects other agricultural food suppliers, namely the livestock industry.

Throw this in with weather conditions, and the weakening U.S. dollar and massive debt, we see prices increasing or containers shrinking, yet for the same price, at the grocery store. This hits us where we live, our wallet, and most of the time it is so gradual we don't even know it is taking place unless we are watching closely.

Recent civil unrest and riots around the world are seemingly political, but many times are connected to food supplies and peoples frustration of no jobs, benefits being cut, resulting from an overspending and in debt government, all of this makes for a very volatile situation, with frustrated people.

We see some of this now with the occupy Wall Street protests, yes, the unrest has come to America. Is this food related? Most likely not, at least on the surface, but if you are cutting into someone's buying power, because of inflation or no jobs, then it always comes back to a certain lifestyle level and what one has to eat.

Political protests can be a bit unruly, but a full blown food riot, downright mean and nasty.

There is one more critical event that could spark food riots in America and that is the U.S. dollar ceasing to be the world's monetary standard, whereby hyperinflation will set in and we could see food prices jump 10-20 fold overnight, this is the biggie that will hit all of us and will especially be hardest on those with no job, if it happens.

Prepare yourself for with goods and stocked up food, whether it be a natural disaster or a longer sustained supply disruption from civil unrest or riots, which we hope will not come to pass.

Writing about the concerns I have for people to be prepared for emergencies and to become more aware of the not so visible events that may have an affect on peoples lives. There are practical inexpensive measures one can take to prepare food wise for even the smallest crisis, even if the big does not come. Civil War Emergency Preparation - Mastering Survival Techniques!

Peace is fast becoming a scarce commodity in all parts of the world. If the threat of war is not from over the boarders it is from within - civil war is what every country fears more than international aggression. The risk of having to face a civil war is an omnipresent risk and people need to need to be educated vis-à-vis what they need to do in times of civil unrest.

There are many countries such as Africa that are no longer affected by a civil war, in fact living in aggression has become a part of their lives, never the less they are well versed with ways of defending themselves and finding food and nutrition for their families. In Africa alone civil war has displaced as many as 5 million families many of them are living in evacuation camps set up by the army and social service organizations like the Red Cross.

Civil war is no different than a conventional war fought between two countries; the only difference is that the army is fighting people within the country. Nevertheless civil war can be a very devastating experience especially for women and children who in most cases are not equipped to fend for themselves. Apart from food, shelter and clothing problems civil war brings with it atrocities in the form of human rights violations - from military as well as civilian forces.

Every family living in a country that is threatened by civil war needs to put in place a contingency plan in case there is any unrest. These people should never live in the hope that their government will provide for them in times of unrest. Government, at most times, will heap atrocities on the people in times of civil war - remember that the government is fighting civilians in their own country. So, civilians are the enemy!

Preparations for civil war should include survival courses where they are trained in the art of self defense as well as the use of fire arms and other weapon training. While training in the use of fire arms adolescents must also be made aware of the dangers of handling a dangerous weapon, not just the adults.

Knowledge of first aid is very important in times of war and so every civilian must be well versed with the use of various first aid techniques. First aid kits must be prepared and kept ready to deal with open wounds as well as diseases such as diarrhea, malaria and other general contagious infectious diseases.

Families facing the threat of civil war need to prepare to be displaced in the hope of escaping violence. These people must prepare a displacement kit that would necessarily include all necessities such as covering, clothes and shoes. These times will mean living on the road for months without shelter. Your displacement kit will be of great help in these times. Include only the bare necessities in the kit to keep it light.

It is necessary to prepare for an emergency rather than hope it will not happen. So, if you are prepared you will have taken care of a few of your worries at least, and you will have improved your chances of surviving.

Guidelines And Emergency Preparations During Volcanic Eruptions

One creation that can really attract people is a volcano. Volcanoes with their drastic yet exquisite appearance have been perfect spots for tourists and travelers.

The perfectly cone-shaped Mayon Volcano in the Philippines and the gorgeous-looking Mt. Fiji in Japan - both are truly a part of nature's wonders.

Though volcanoes are fascinating in appearance, these creations can also be very destructive that even human lives can sacrifice. Volcanoes have two types - dormant and active.

Dormant volcanoes are those, which do not erupt. On the other hand active volcanoes can be very dangerous as eruption can take place once some geothermal activity inside these volcanoes starts.

There are volcanoes that are active and most of these volcanoes are found in the Pacific's Rim of Fire. These volcanoes have the intensity to kill crops, vegetation and human lives. Volcano ashes can also cause a lot of lung diseases and health problems.

Frequent volcanic eruptions also accompany high earthquake intensities. These can be very precarious for citizens around the area and if rain occurs, it would be very hard to respond as mudflows can make the situation harder.

Volcanic eruptions can be detected unlike other catastrophic natural disasters. The volcano will show some signs if it is about to erupt. Also, the lava formation, which will trigger the eruption, will take some times to build up.

Through this, volcanologists (volcano experts) can warn people living in the volcano's vicinity to prepare out for an upcoming volcanic eruption. Below are some helpful tips that could help you to prepare for volcanic eruptions:

1. If you live next to the volcano it is more advisable for you to evacuate immediately to a safe evacuation center. It is also important to bring along with you necessary things that you will be needing all through out your stay in the evacuation center.

As much as possible, remain calm during the situation and try not to panic.

2. Whenever mudflow occurs, stay to a safe area away from the mudflow ways. Mudflows are hot enough to boil an egg that's why you must keep yourself away from it to avoid any burns, which can lead to a more serious skin disease.

3. Be sure to stay inside a safe shelter all throughout the volcanic eruption. There will be falling debris like stones and rocks once the volcano erupts.

4. Use gas mask to secure yourself from suffocation of volcanic sulfur. This sulfur can be very dangerous to your health especially to your lungs and can give you difficulties in breathing.

5. Always seek advices from volcanic experts or government public services for you to be able to know when to go outside safely.

Volcanoes are one of the nature's most beautiful sights yet one of the most destructive forces. For people living in the volcanoes area, considering the above tips and guidelines is barely important thus no serious situation can happen, as we know that life cannot be reverted again.

Emergency Preparation For Industrial Organizations

Emergencies especially in industrial sites can be prevented if everyone in the circle first considers preparation. Since lack of emergency preparation brought up many into tremendous disasters, it would be preferable that everybody would conduct emergency preparation plans and methods.

If preparations are taken into consideration, problems will be discovered earlier before it possibly exists. Some problems that industries commonly encounter are lack of industrial supply, lack of trained personnel, limited equipments and many more.

It is important to take note of such problems before they lead to a more serious condition like disintegrated financial organization.

Preparation also awakes every worker's awareness regarding a subject. This will cause him to list down possible solutions to problems he might encounter. This will lead to a better industrial organization especially for those companies who really emphasize alertness and safety.

In order to be prepared to any industrial emergencies, below are effective tips you must consider:

1. A well-structured industry mainly depends on the team being established. The leader down to the staffs is promoted based on their character, skills and competencies. Specific tasks must also be given to the members of the club so everybody has the part in maintaining the industry.

2. Analyzing hazardous events is vital. Risks like power failure, natural catastrophes, destroyed structures and broken industrial equipments are some existing problems an industry might encounter.

There should be a preparation plan for these kinds of emergencies so that higher number of casualties and damages will be prevented.

The industry must call the attention of local floodplain authorities in case the company experiences flooding. This is to get an appropriate emergency preparation for such crisis.

3. There should also be emergency kits prepared beforehand. Emergency tools like generator and heat system and battery storage should taken into account.

Manuals and information regarding utilities should be accessible. Alternatives for power supply must be updated and communication systems must be launched.

4. Important industrial documents and records must be kept in a safe location.

5. There must be protocol established before, during and after an emergency. Every staff, personnel and members of the board should follow strictly the instructions given by industrial authorities so any worst outcome can be avoided.

The last step will be the recovery process where any damages and casualties are assessed. Prioritizing repairs and replacements are next in line.

Safety first lies in the preparation and planning of industries. This is for everybody to have knowledge regarding dilemmas and unsafe situations that might arise once they are not paid attention.

How Important Is Climate Change Emergency Preparation?

The world - from the past up to this ever present times has undergone many changes and advancements brought by human's curiosity and vision. The willingness to improve one's single task, which makes expert people to launch various inventions, has proven that we are now on a planet where almost everything can be achieved in an instant.

Instant food, instant cleaning, and instant moneymaking - technology has really improved the old-fashioned broom into an electrical floor sweeper one.

To think practically, these changes really appreciate one's time and effort. Just imagine you wouldn't have to clean your clothes manually because a machine for cloth's cleaning has been invented and trusted for decades. You may keep yourself cool by air conditioner stuffs as doing it manually might cause headache and a waste of effort.

However the advancement in technology brought negative drawbacks globally. The very single refrigerator can drastically destroy our planet's climate. A small mobile phone can add a huge impact on earth's climate changes.

The more we enjoy these various advancements, the more our planet suffers from these climate changes and wait...the worst the future that awaits us!

More and more incidents of natural disasters have brought people into an alarm. Different countries with different beliefs and cultures - all have agreed that Mother Nature have reached its fullest. We are totally very demanding that we never notice this earth is in a critical state already.

Often incidents of earthquakes, typhoons, landslides and many other calamities reported almost every single day are actually caused by our carelessness. Littering of wastes, factories that throw chemicals on the rivers, illegal logging and an extensive use of non-biodegradable materials are just only a few crimes we commit everyday against our environment.

Although many kinds of preservation and artificial enhancements just to let this planet as much as possible stay calm, we can never escape from the fact that the old, fresh and peaceful Mother Nature will never come back again. As soon as the nature's revenge comes, we should be prepared for the upcoming disasters caused by climate changes.

Climate changes can lead to different abnormal happenings like forest fires, sudden increasing of sea water level, too hot or too cold climates and many other phenomena. Global warming is one effect of climate changes and this roots many natural disasters.

Though these effects cannot be reverted anymore, we can delay it by having preparations. An important thing that should be considered is to know the possible effects of these calamities. What actions should be taken into account as much as possible to lessen the effects is barely significant as well.

The major preparation actually lies in the federal government along with scientists and experts. Programs should be implemented and education about natural disasters and drilling should be spread out through launching a massive information campaign.

Though government plays a significant role for keeping everybody alarmed, the action is still done individually. Everyone must have the knowledge.

Even younger people must know how to response when disaster attacks. It is barely important to train everybody in your family and society about drilling and preparations so that as much as possible no life can be sacrificed.
